Andrei the Western Hognose is a beautifully patterned Hognose and has a lovely temperament, particularly for his breed.  He is considered to have an ‘Anaconda phase’ morph; and if you’re unfamiliar with morphs, this term is simply used to describe the pattern and colour on reptiles and snakes to help identify them.

Hognose snakes can be found across the hole of North America; Western Hognose snakes originate in the Western half of the continent; however, these snakes can be found in all sorts of different climates.  Should they happen to find themselves in a colder area – such as South Dakota during the winter – they will brumate (or hibernate) for a few months until the weather warms up.

The name of this snake comes from the distinct up-turned scale on its nose; this scale can be used to forage for food as well as to dig burrows.

The Anaconda phase is so called because… This is sometimes abbreviated to ‘Conda’ so that it isn’t confused with the anaconda snake, which this hognose has nothing to do with.  Being a ‘Conda phase’, Andrei is cream and brown coloured, resembling fudge, caramel and toffee.  He’s truly as sweet as he looks!

This species is known to be more hiss than bite and has the reputation of being a “bluffer.”  The Hognose is typically a docile snake, yet is known to be highly defensive in behaviour.  If threatened the hognose may flatten its neck (much like a highly venomous cobra), hiss and make ‘bluff’ strikes if harassed, which are strikes made at an intruder but with the mouth closed.   Even when further harassed, Western Hognose snakes virtually never bite as a self defence mechanism, but will instead usually resort to playing dead instead!  It is more common that the snake will flatten its head, some individuals (including Andrei) puff up, filling the throat with air.

From Kaa in The Jungle Book to Nagini in the Harry Potter series, snakes have been featuring in popular culture for a long time. They’re not always evil either!  We have many lovely, caring and funny snakes in film and literature including Master Viper in Kung fu Panda and Sandy the Snake in Sesame Street.

Andrei got his name from the famous Manchester United footballer, Andrei Kanchelskis  and was adopted from owner relinquishment at the age of seven; this species live between 15 and 20 years in captivity.  For a Hognose, Andrei is a very friendly snake that does well with handling, sometimes seeking out attention.  He loves his forever home where he gets plenty of enrichment and exercise.

The Western Hognose snake is primarily diurnal and can therefore easily work during daytime hours, as opposed to some of the nocturnal snakes.  In their natural environment, these snakes spend their time in sandy or gravelly soils, including prairies, river floodplains, scrub and grasslands, semi-deserts and some semiagricultural areas.   If your film or TV series has this type of setting, Andrei is exactly the type of snake that will complete the scene setting.

If you’d like Andrei to work with actors, it should be taken into consideration that Western Hognose snakes are venomous, but the venom is not dangerous to humans.  A bite from a Hognose can cause swelling; that being said, due to Andrei’s temperament, he is unlikely to bite and can be handled by well-behaved children, though we’d recommend those over the age of 10 years old.  No deaths or systemic effects from the extremely rare bite from this rear-fanged snake have ever been recorded.

Our expert herpetologists and snake handlers can guide your cast and crew with safe handling and working in close proximity with Andrei or other hognose snakes.

Western Hognose snakes are truly beautiful and Andrei is no exception.  His toffee and caramel colouring is both luxurious and desirable, so we can picture Andrei pictured alongside luxury handbags and haute couture fashion.

His upturned scale on his face is both useful within his natural habitat and looks-wise it is slightly comical, giving Andrei a truly unique appearance. This, combined with his black tongue is both vivid and intriguing to observe.

Due to his markings, Andrei can be set against any colour backdrop; his neutral tones are understated and work well with any colour palette.  He’s a stylish snake, we’re sure you’ll agree.

Andrei not only looks magnificent, but has a great temperament, particularly for his species.  He has been socialised well and tolerates handling from steady individuals, meaning he can work easily alongside human models.

Andrei is yet to have professional studio experience, though we know that his character and appearance make him a great candidate.  This snake model is suitable for all types of roles in film and television as well as stills photoshoots.  To hire a Western Hognose snake like Andrei for your next media production, contact enquiries@theanimaltalent.agency.
