There are four species of lynx, of which the Eurasian lynx is the largest in size and the Bobcat is on average the smallest. However there are considerable variations within the four species.
Lynxes have a short tail, characteristic tufts of black hair on the tips of their ears, large, padded paws for walking on snow and long whiskers on the face. Under their neck, they have a ruff, which has black bars resembling a bow tie, although this is often not visible.
Body colour varies from medium brown to goldish to beige/white and is occasionally marked with dark brown spots, especially on the limbs. All species of lynx have white fur on their chests, bellies and on the insides of their legs.
The lynx’s colouring, fur length and paw size vary according to the climate in their range. In the Southwestern United States, they are short-haired, dark in colour and their paws are smaller and less padded. As climates get colder and more northerly, lynx have progressively thicker fur, lighter colour, and their paws are larger and more padded to adapt to the snow. Their paws can be larger than a human hand or foot!
They inhabit high altitude forests with dense cover of shrubs, reeds, and tall grass. Although this cat hunts on the ground, they can climb trees and can swim swiftly, catching fish. Lynxes are usually solitary, although a small group of lynx may travel and hunt together occasionally.
Most lynx range in size from about 80-120cm long, without the 10-20cm tail and stand about 60cm tall at the shoulder. Their weights range from 7-30kg for males and with the females being much smaller at 7-14kg.

A DWA licence is required for handling the lynx and therefore strict transportation and set guidelines will apply.
If any species of animal listed under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act are required, special measures will need to be put into place for the shoot. Precisely what is appropriate will vary species to species, but may include sectioned off areas where only trained handlers are allowed. In the event of large and dangerous carnivores, a specifically built green screen studio can also be supplied.
