King, the Mexican Black King Snake is a reptile model with a striking (pardon the pun) appearance; he is jet black all over his body and very dark eyes as well. When he sticks out his pinky, purply tongue, it makes a striking contrast.
Like all kingsnakes, the Mexican black kingsnake is a constrictor and non-venomous. Their diet includes other snakes (ophiophagy) —particularly rattlesnakes which are also common to the region— and as a result, has developed a resilience to various kinds of venom, hence the name of “king of the snakes”.
In King’s case, you may find his name unoriginal, but in actual fact, is a reference to the kings of Old Trafford (Denis Law and Eric Cantona of Manchester United fame); although we have yet to see King play with an actual football!
Mexican Black King Snakes have a great relationship with humans and have been featured in much popular culture and folklore over the years. Walt Disney’s documentary The Living Desert, and films The Reaping, Renegade and of course, the cult classic, Snakes on a Plane, all featured this species.
In terms of symbolism and culture, there are many stories about the MBK. In Native American culture, particularly among the Aztecs, the Mexican Black Kingsnake is considered a powerful symbol of transformation and rebirth. It’s believed that this snake embodies the duality of life and death, representing both creation and destruction. In some tribes, the Mexican Black Kingsnake is considered a protector of homes and crops. Its presence signifies protection from harm or negative energy.
Also in Aztec mythology, Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent god, is often depicted with a black king snake around his neck which symbolises wisdom and knowledge.
If you’re working in advertising or marketing, these symbolisms may help you pick the right snake to represent your brand. At any rate, king snakes are a popular choice due to their very impressive appearance.
Mexican Black King Snakes are known for their calm temperament and ease of handling; King is no exception. He has a docile nature and enjoys the company of humans.
All in all, King is a lovely boy and has handled all the noises and lighting in a busy studio environment very well in his professional experience. He is used to being handled and has worked with children before.
King is an agile snake that can move very quickly, so if it’s speed and activity that you’re going for, he’s surely the snake for you. He is impressive to watch in movement.
If you’re worried about filming snakes, try not to panic; when threatened, Mexican Black Kingsnakes have various defence mechanisms. They may hiss, vibrate their tails, release a foul-smelling musk, but rarely bite. Be reassured that they are generally non-aggressive and will try to escape rather than engage in confrontation. King is a docile snake with bags of confidence and is more than capable of working with actors of all ages.
The Mexican Black Kingsnake is a protected species in Mexico, highlighting the need for conservation efforts to ensure their survival. We’d simply love it if your media project highlighted their plight. This is a wonderful species that we truly adore and feel should be celebrated more throughout media productions.
King is a fine looking snake and his image will work well in anything from elegant fashion shoots to horror photography. His jet black scales and his jet black eyes are particularly spectacular and function well in any photography theming.
Being monochrome in colour, King is a striking subject against any colour backdrop in the studio or even out on location. His long, slender body with smooth scales that reflect a blueish shimmer in certain lighting is really impressive to witness.
King is a confident snake, happy to be handled by human models of all ages and our experienced handler can guide models to working with him safely.
Our beautiful King is a fine example of his breeding so his image is appropriate for species specific photography portraying a fit and healthy body.
King is experienced in the professional studio and has had handling sessions with all ages of people in different environments. He’s a confident snake and happy to work either out on location or in studios. King and handler are both experienced in the professional world of TV and film.
