General Description

Not many models on our books take direction in two languages. Benji is fully bilingual, responding to cues in both English and Polish, which says a great deal about how quickly this bright young terrier absorbs whatever he is taught. Benji is already turning into an upcoming star, he recently featured in the Nothing But Thieves music video for “Baby Kool (Evelyn)”. His Instagram handle, @benjiforbiscuits, cheerfully gives away his secret: he is powered by food, and that appetite makes him remarkably responsive, quick to learn and a genuine pleasure to train.

To look at, Benji is a proper charmer. His ginger coat is finished with crisp white socks and distinctive facial markings and his dark, expressive eyes lend him a thoughtful, almost quizzical air that the camera adores. Temperamentally he pairs terrier brightness with an unusually gentle nature – friendly and calm with people, careful and courteous when meeting other dogs and quietly confident in new surroundings rather than bouncing off the walls.

The Parson Russell Terrier owes its existence to the Reverend John “Jack” Russell, a nineteenth-century Devon parson who bred a leggy, fearless little white terrier to run with his hunt. The Russell family of terriers has since built arguably the finest screen record of any type of dog: Uggie stole The Artist, Moose played the scene-stealing Eddie in Frasier and Milo bounded through The Mask, all trading on the same alert, comic intelligence that Benji carries in spades.

One practical note for the diary: because food sits at the centre of Benji’s universe, edible props are best kept under his handler’s control – though the upside is that a pocketful of treats will buy his complete attention and his warm cooperation with any stranger on set.

Benji is a born comedian. He looks sad on cue, creeps across a room like a cartoon burglar, begs, plants a kiss and will happily tug a sock clean off a foot, a repertoire made for sitcoms, sketch comedy and mischievous-puppy storylines. Add in opening a box, pawing at a door and dragging an object across a floor and writers have a whole toolkit of visual gags at their disposal.

Underneath the comedy sits solid discipline. He can be placed in position, drops into a down, goes to bed, stays put and falls quiet on command, while an emergency stop and dependable recall under distraction let him work safely off lead. His consistent eye contact and fluency with hand signals mean he takes silent direction mid-take without a word being spoken – in either language. Scent work and retrieving, including from water, round out his credentials for adventure sequences and countryside storylines, and his motion capture aptitude makes digital productions an option too.

Benji’s colouring does half the work for photographers: rich ginger against clean white pops against neutral backdrops and gives stylists plenty to play with. He holds a pose, follows a pointed finger to look up, across or over his shoulder and redirects his gaze between marks, so achieving a precise composition with him is refreshingly painless.

His willingness to wear clothing puts pet apparel and knitwear ranges within easy reach for a dog conveniently sized S/M, while treat and biscuit brands could hardly ask for a more sincere ambassador than a dog whose social media is literally named after them. That signature sock-pulling trick begs to be borrowed by laundry, hosiery and flooring campaigns chasing a memorable comic image. He also holds an item steadily in his mouth for hero shots, greets the public delightfully at meet and greet events and travels without complaint, arriving everywhere with the cheerful, biddable energy of a dog who assumes something wonderful is about to happen.
