Eight Essential On-Set Precautions

Filming with dogs is a rewarding experience, bringing warmth, humour and relatability to any production. However, with rising temperatures during the summer months, it’s crucial to understand the specific needs of canine talent on set. At The Animal Talent Ltd, we place animal welfare at the heart of everything we do, and that means taking every precaution to ensure dogs are safe, happy and healthy; especially when filming in hot weather.

Why Heat Is a Serious Concern for Dogs on Set
Unlike humans, dogs don’t sweat through their skin. They rely on panting and limited sweat glands in their paws to regulate body temperature. This makes them particularly vulnerable to heatstroke, dehydration and even burnt paw pads on hot surfaces. Brachycephalic breeds with flat faces (like Pugs or Bulldogs), senior dogs, overweight dogs and those with thick coats are at higher risk.

Key On-Set Precautions for Filming with Dogs in Warm Weather

  1. Shade and Shelter
Always provide a shaded area for dogs to rest between takes. Whether outdoors or indoors under strong lighting, a cool, covered space is essential. Pop-up tents, parasols and air-conditioned trailers are ideal.
  2. Fresh Water Supply
Dogs should have constant access to fresh, clean water. On particularly hot days, it’s helpful to offer cool (not ice-cold) water frequently and monitor intake. Collapsible travel bowls and water dispensers make this easy and mess-free.
  3. Cool-Down Breaks
Frequent breaks are non-negotiable. Schedule downtime every 15-20 minutes in extreme heat, and never force a dog to continue working if they appear tired, overheated, or stressed. Shorter filming sessions with ample rest prevent heat-related illnesses.
  4. Avoiding Hot Surfaces
Tarmac, sand and artificial surfaces can reach dangerously high temperatures quickly. Always test with your hand — if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for them. Protective booties, cooling mats or simply filming earlier or later in the day can prevent injury.
  5. Cooling Aids
Cooling coats, damp towels, fans, and dog-safe cooling mats are excellent ways to regulate body temperature. Misting fans or sprays can also be used carefully to help dogs stay cool between shots.
  6. Watch for Warning Signs
All on-set crew should be briefed on signs of heat exhaustion in dogs: excessive panting, drooling, glazed eyes, staggering, vomiting or collapsing. If any of these symptoms are observed, filming should stop immediately and the dog should be removed from the heat and treated.
  7. Veterinary Backup
For professional shoots, especially outdoors or in unfamiliar environments, it’s good practice to have a qualified vet or animal first-aider on standby. At The Animal Talent Ltd, our animals are accompanied by trained handlers who are experienced in spotting early signs of distress.
  8. Breed-Specific Planning
Different breeds have different tolerances. For example, Huskies and Newfoundlands are naturally suited to cooler climates, whereas Whippets or Chihuahuas may cope better. When booking a dog for a summer shoot, we advise clients on the most suitable breeds for the conditions.
