The Rise of the Cat Model and Actor

From gracing the covers of magazines to starring in advertising campaigns, films, and television shows, cats are making their mark in various forms of media.  With their playful antics, striking looks, and undeniable charm, they capture the hearts of millions worldwide.  This pet animal has every right to be termed “Top Cat”!

In recent years, the demand for cat models and actors has surged, with brands and production companies seeking out these furry talents to add a touch of feline flair to their projects.  Whether it’s showcasing a product in an advertisement or bringing a character to life on screen, cats offer a unique appeal that resonates with audiences of all ages.

And it’s not just pet products that brands require cats for in their advertising; keep your eyes peeled and you’ll see cats used in advertising campaigns for all sorts of products including GoPro, Cravendale, O2 and many other brands.  Recently at The Animal Talent, we’ve worked with a variety of breeds of cats in TV series for Paramount, BBC and ITV.  In advertising, we’ve worked with cats for Harringtons, Edgard Cooper, Pets At Home, Milbemax, Cosmopolitan as just a few examples.

How Much Can My Cat Earn?

One of the most pressing questions for pet owners considering their cat’s foray into the world of modelling or acting is, “How much can my cat earn?”  While the earnings potential can vary depending on factors such as the cat’s popularity, level of training, and the specific project they’re involved in, some cats have managed to rake in significant sums.

Our industry experts at The Animal Talent state that cat models and actors can earn anywhere starting from £100 for the day, increasing depending upon the requirements for the assignment.  High-profile campaigns and film roles can command even higher payment, with some top-tier cat actors reportedly earning into the thousands annually.

Cats in the UK in 2024

As of 2024, the United Kingdom is home to an estimated 12 million pet cats, according to the latest statistics from Pet Keen.  This figure highlights the significant presence of cats in households across the country, reinforcing their status as beloved companions and cultural icons and necessitating their presence in media and popular culture.

Why Are Cats So Popular?

Just what is it about cats that makes them such popular subjects for modelling, acting, and media presence?  Several factors contribute to their widespread appeal:

1. Their undeniable, adorable aesthetic:  Cats boast an irresistible charm and photogenic quality that makes them perfect for capturing attention in visual mediums.  The way they move is quite captivating and a joy to capture on film.  Let’s face it; cats are cool.  Cats are cute.  Cats are amazing in every way!

2. Relatability: From their playful antics to their independent nature, cats exhibit behaviour that resonates with audiences worldwide.  They transcend all boundaries from age to gender to cultural background; everyone knows and loves cats.  On an anthropomorphic level, the nation adores cats and sees them as something to mother, like a new baby; this in turn creates a strong emotional connection.

3. Internet Sensations: The proliferation of cat videos and memes on social media has catapulted cats to internet stardom, further fuelling their popularity as entertainment icons.  From Grumpy Cat to Larry, the Downing Street Cat, we are kept captivated by all things feline.

4.  Versatility:  Whether it’s a comedic commercial or a dramatic film role, cats can portray roles in a wide range of genres, making them versatile subjects for media.  Cats love to train with their handlers and well prepared, trained cat actors perform well for the camera.  Cats can truly astonish production crews when working or set and they’re an animal we’re always proud to work with here at The Animal Talent.

How can my cat get into modelling?

While not every cat may have what it takes to become a model or actor, the potential for feline fame is undoubtedly present.  With the right combination of charisma, training, and opportunity, your cat could be the next breakout star in the world of advertising, film and television.  So, if you’ve ever wondered, “Can my cat be a model?” – the answer might just be a resounding “yes!”

Getting your cat into modelling can be an exciting journey, but it requires careful planning, preparation, and perseverance. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process:

1. Assess Your Cat’s Suitability

Not all cats are cut out for modelling and that is absolutely ok.  All cats deserve to live the life they want to live.  Before embarking on this journey, evaluate your cat’s temperament and behavioural characteristics to determine if they have the potential to succeed in the industry.

As animal talent agents, we are looking to work with cats that have confidence in a variety of situations and locations.  Cats must be happy, confident and have a calm demeanour, plus a willingness to be handled and trained outside of the home, in environments such as film sets and photography studios.

Here at The Animal Talent, we would never force an animal to do anything they didn’t want to.  We want cats to enjoy their work and get rewards for that work too.  It is super important to us that cats are confident and happy to work, so if your cat prefers staying home, let’s keep it that way.

2. Professional Photography

Invest in a professional grooming session to ensure your cat looks their best for photo shoots and auditions.  By having experience in a professional photography studio.

High-quality photographs are crucial for creating a standout portfolio, so hire a skilled pet photographer to capture your cat’s unique charm and personality.

3. Create a Compelling Portfolio

Compile a portfolio showcasing a variety of poses, expressions, and settings to highlight your cat’s versatility as a model. Include close-up shots of their face, full-body images, and candid shots that capture their natural beauty.  It’s also a good idea to showcase some of the skills that your dog has; for example performing cat agility, or posing in a “beg” position.

Make sure your portfolio is well-organised and presented in a professional manner, for example, name the photo files the name of your cat to make it easy for your agent when they download the photographs.

4. Find Representation

Consider working with a reputable pet talent agency that specialises in representing animal actors and models.  Research agencies that have experience in the pet industry and a track record of placing cats in modelling gigs.  Your agent should have experience in training and handling cats for film and TV, as well as understanding the nature, characteristics and temperaments of different cat breeds.

Submit your cat’s portfolio along with any relevant information about their training and experience to prospective agencies.  Your agent will be a long term advocate for your cat; they should be concerned about animal welfare and your cat’s career throughout their lives.  The animal talent agency will have a good track record of working with key players in the film, TV and photography industries.

5. Training and Socialisation

Invest time and effort in training your cat to follow basic cues and behave appropriately in various settings.  This is important in terms of modelling and acting work, but most importantly, it helps build the bond with you and your cat as well as enhancing their confidence.  It is imperative that your cat shows up to their work in the studio or on set with confidence and feeling happy in a new environment.  We want cats to be happy in their work, not scared.

In preparation, socialise your cat with different people, animals, and environments to ensure they’re comfortable and confident during photoshoots and auditions.  Positive reinforcement techniques can be highly effective in teaching new skills and behaviours.  Your agent will advise on the best training that’s appropriate for you and your cat, but the basics will include “sit”, “stay”, “recall”, “lead and harness training” and the ability to perform in any new building or location.

6. Network and Promote Your Cat

Attend pet-related events, networking functions, and industry gatherings to connect with fellow professionals in the modelling and entertainment industries.  Utilise social media platforms to showcase your cat’s portfolio, engage with followers and build a fan base which will attract the attention of potential clients and collaborators.  Consider creating a dedicated website or online portfolio to further promote your cat’s modelling career.  Consider entering local cat shows with official governing bodies, such as TICA, GCCF and FIFE.  Here on the show circuit, you’ll find a supportive network of fellow cat owners who are interested in cat training and more.

7. Be Patient and Persistent

Securing modelling opportunities for your cat may take time and persistence. Be prepared for rejection and setbacks along the way, but remain confident in your cat’s abilities and continue pursuing opportunities that align with their talents and interests.  Stay proactive in seeking out new opportunities and expanding your cat’s professional network.  A working cat can expect to get a handful of jobs a year; keep your expectations realistic and have honest conversations with your agent about how you can increase your cat’s chances.  Remember that this is meant to be a fun partnership for you both and provide excellent mental stimulation and enrichment opportunities.  Cat welfare should always be the priority.

By following these steps and staying committed to your cat’s modelling aspirations, you can increase their chances of success in the competitive world of pet modelling. With dedication, patience, and a little bit of luck, your cat could soon be strutting their stuff on catwalks and gracing the pages of magazines and TV screens around the world.
